Measured, lucid, serene, and above all, superlatively intelligent, Martin Hughes's piano recital at the Queen Elizabeth Hall yesterday was an artistic triumph, something for his audience to treasure in their hearts and minds. Martin Hughes delivered the solo part of Oiseaux Exotiques with brilliant vividness, hectic and delicate by turns and always lucid; superb playing,echoed in the raucous avian swirlings and drummings of wind and percussion Martin Hughes is an excellent pianist; not only does he have a rich technical ability, a quality he shares with many others, but also a capacity for a very special personal commentary - his interpretation is unique Martin Hughes is a marvellous pianist and he brought much refinement and energy to the work (Beethoven Piano Concerto Nr. 2 Op. 19) . His cadenza in the first movement was superb; it managed to be virtuosic and understated simultaneously and was so well articulated that every note rang out.
