Anthem for a Priest

This anthem was written to celebrate the ordination of a Catholic priest. It is in the form of an antiphon and psalm verses, with the antiphon repeated after the psalm.

In its revised version, it was first performed in Denton, Texas, in December 2006.

Forces are SATB chorus and organ. It is not difficult to sing or play and has proved popular with performers and congregations. Length is 3 minutes. The text is in English:

The Lord hath established a covenant of peace with him, and made him a priest: That he should have the dignity of priesthood for ever.

The Lord sware and will not repent: Thou art a priest forever, after the order of Melchisidek.

O ye priests of the Lord, bless ye the Lord; O ye holy and humble men of heart praise God.

Praise the Lord ye servants: O praise the name of the Lord; Blessed be the name of the Lord: from this time forth for evermore;

The Lord's name is praised from the rising up of the sun until the going down of the same; The Lord is high above all heathen and his glory above the heavens.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning: is now and ever shall be.

The Lord hath established a covenant of peace with him, and made him a priest: That he should have the dignity of priesthood for ever.
